Two New Images from Neill Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM Starring Matt Damon

Elysium Matt Damon 2 - CopySony Pictures has released two brand new images from director Neill Blomkamp‘s upcoming sci-fi epic, Elysium.  The film’s first trailer is extremely impressive, and these images are singing the same tune.  Blomkamp’s critically acclaimed District 9 was a fantastic film that not many people gave themselves the opportunity to truly enjoy.  But Elysium‘s scale trumps that of District 9, and so do its star status and huge budget.  The film takes place in 2159 where two classes of divided people exist: the extremely wealthy who inherit the privilege to live on a man-made space station called Elysium, leaving the rest of humanity to live on the overpopulated planet Earth.  I’m a believer of the notion that when sci-fi is done right, it’s some of the best work to experience.  Hit the jump to take a look at the images.

Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Shalto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, and Diego Luna and hits theaters this summer on August 9th.

Synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
