Disney Confirms Standalone STAR WARS Films – Han Solo and Boba Fett Films in the Works
It has been rumored that the first standalone Star Wars film over at Walt Disney Studios will center upon Yoda. We all already know that director JJ Abrams will be in the director’s chair for Episode VII. In an interview with CNBC yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Iger brought us up to speed on what their plans are for the Star Wars franchise. Iger confirmed that screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are currently working on standalone films for characters already established within previous installments in the franchise. According to EW, two of these spinoff films will focus on a young Han Solo and bounty hunter Boba Fett. Hit the jump to read more.
Talking with CNBC yesterday, Bob Iger offered this information on the expansion of the Star Wars franchise:
I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too.
The rumor regarding a standalone film focusing on Yoda has not been denied yet, so that may very well be in the works. The folks over at EW report that two spinoffs are definitely in the works:
A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum.
The Han Solo film will reportedly take place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. As we will be seeing a younger Han Solo, we’ll obviously be seeing a new actor take the reins of the character. There isn’t much certainty on when the Boba Fett film will take place, but EW reports it will take place either between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, or Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As far as who will play the character isn’t necessarily important considering he never took his helmet off in the original trilogy. As these films will take place during the original trilogy, it is very likely that we will see the return of many other iconic characters within the franchise.
Iger seems confident that other spinoffs will appear between Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, so there are many different directions that the studio could go before we see Episode VII hit theaters some time in 2015 – although Kathleen Kennedy hasn’t confirmed the 2015 release date yet. Exciting news for Star Wars fans and movie fans alike!
