Ubisoft to Move Forward with Splinter Cell Film Adaptation, Tom Hardy Attached to Star
After swirling rumors that Ubisoft was planning to move forward with a film adaptation of their acclaimed video game series Splinter Cell, it looks like they are one step closer to making that a reality. Earlier today, it was announced that Eric Singer has been approached by Ubisoft to pen the script for the film. Singer wrote the script for director Tom Tykwer’s 2009 film The International, which was met with mixed reviews. In other related news, The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy has been attached to star in the film. Hit the jump to find out more.
Ever since 2009’s Inception, Hardy has been quite the commodity in Hollywood – starring in hits like Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises, and is also starring in the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road. There’s no denying that Hardy is a gifted actor, so the news that he continues to rack up big roles comes as no surprise. With the success of the Splinter Cell game franchise, there’s certainly a good chance the film adaptation could turn into a series of films. This is huge news for Ubisoft seeing that New Regency and Ubisoft announced just a few weeks ago that Prometheus star Michael Fassbender will be the lead role in a film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.
In an interview with Variety, Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had this to say:
“Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and … we’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story … while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”
